📊 Race-to-N Win Probability

Enter your chance of winning a single game and the target number of games, and see how likely you are to win the whole race — with optional support for a handicap race.

🎱 From One Game to the Whole Match

Assumes each game is independent with no ties. Match win probability = the chance you reach your target number of game wins first.

How the odds are worked out

Knowing you win roughly six games in ten does not tell you how often you win a race to seven — the maths of stringing games together is what decides that. Treating each game as an independent trial with your stated win rate, the calculator computes the exact probability that you reach your target number of wins before your opponent reaches theirs.

Use it to see how a longer race magnifies even a small per-game edge, to price a money match, or to work out how much of a spot turns a coin-flip into a favourite. It is a probability model, so real results still swing with form, nerves, and the roll of the balls.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a race to N?

A race to N is a match won by the first player to reach N game wins — race to 5 means first to five. It is the standard format for pool matches and money games, and unlike a fixed number of games it can run any length from N games up to 2N-1.

How is the match win probability calculated?

Assuming each game is independent and there are no ties, the calculator uses the negative-binomial formula: it sums, over every number of games your opponent might win before you reach your target, the probability that your winning game lands exactly there. That closed form gives the exact chance you win the race, given your per-game win rate.

Why does a longer race favour the better player?

A single game is close to a coin flip even between mismatched players, so upsets happen. Over a longer race the luck averages out and the stronger player's edge compounds. Enter a per-game chance above 50% and raise the target: you will see your match probability climb well past your per-game number.

Can I model a handicap race?

Yes. Tick the handicap box and set a different target for your opponent. Racing to a shorter number than your opponent lifts your chances — that is exactly the effect a games-on-the-wire spot is meant to give a weaker player.
